Senior Backend Engineer - Athens, Hybrid (3-2)

A fast-growing Greek fintech scale-up is building payment infrastructure products for Southern Europe and expanding its core platform team to support EU licensing growth. The role exists to bring senior backend ownership to a system that processes millions of transactions per day and needs engineering leadership that can deliver at scale without cutting corners.

The Role

You will own the design and delivery of high-throughput REST and async APIs, shipping the new reconciliation microservice end-to-end and driving adoption of async task patterns across the backend. Alongside the technical delivery, you will mentor two mid-level engineers and contribute to architectural decisions that will shape the platform roadmap. This is a role for someone who leads by building things that last.

What You'll Bring

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience
• Deep expertise in Python 3.x and Django or Django REST Framework
• Production experience with PostgreSQL query optimisation and migrations
• Hands-on experience with Celery, Redis and event-driven architectures
• Strong command of RESTful API design, versioning and security best practices
• Fluent English, Greek is an advantage

Nice to Have

• Experience in fintech, payments or regulated financial environments
• Familiarity with Kafka or RabbitMQ for event streaming
• AWS production experience across ECS, RDS and SQS
